Progress Report …

Time is marching on and we are getting closer and closer to our goal of starting the next chapter in our life. There is still much to do before we’re able to jump on that plane headed for Panama city to begin our adventure. Our main focus this far has been completing the work on our house so we can get it on the market to sell. This part of our preparation is the biggest and obviously most time consuming part of the diabolical plan. We are still hoping to reach our goal of getting the house ready to sell by February or March at the latest. Scott is making great progress on all the finish work inside the house.

We now have baseboards and interior door trim as well as finish trim on all the windows. All the bedrooms have gotten most of the details completed and just one cabinet door in the spare bathroom needs installing. Closets are done and floors throughout are competed. The final push towards completion is the finish work on the cabinetry in the kitchen, built-ins around the fireplace in the living room and the woodwork in the dining room. Oh, one last project is the finish on the front door. That’s Scott’s list for the interior then the final work to be done will be the clean up of the backyard and landscaping of that area. We decided that while he’s doing the backyard we will hire professional painters to do all the interior and exterior painting. Sounds like quite a bit of work! February is fast approaching ! The timeframe we have set for our completion is only a goal, there’s no reason to rush or stress ourselves out . Everything that needs to get done will get done, there’s certainly no reason to cause ourselves any unnecessary panic ! The biggest thing is simply the knowledge that the springtime is widely known as the best time to sell a house. The real estate market here in California , and especially in the area where our house is located is very strong. There is very limited inventory and houses here are selling pretty quickly. So we’re feeling pretty optimistic about getting our house sold pretty swiftly.

It’s about time for us to think about retaining an attorney to aide us in the residency process. There is quite a bit of paperwork and documentation we need to gather before we leave the states. Some documentation is time sensitive so it will be helpful to have an attorney in Panama we can communicate with . I’ve mentioned before that Scott and I follow several forums in Panama and we have collected recommendations from other recent expats on attorneys who they highly recommend . There is a husband and wife who are English speaking Panamanian attorneys in Panama city who we are planning to contact soon. We have many questions that would be helpful to know the answers to. Questions like, is it best for us to collect documentation such as FBI background checks before or after we get ourselves settled in Boquete ? How much time can we expect to spend in government offices in Panama city? If we need to do the background checks ‘before’ we leave the states how soon should we start that process? Is there anything more that we need to know about bringing our cats with us aside from the necessity of arranging a vet to inspect them upon arrival at the Panama city airport? There are, of course many such questions that will be helpful for us to have the answers to sooner than later. We’ve also tried not to be too premature on our search for a house to rent in Boquete . Given the fact that we don’t have a firm departure date we really can’t make any commitments or expect landlords to hold a place open for us. But it will be nice to have a home pinned down. We don’t expect to have too much difficulty, except for our cats. We don’t know how potential landlords will feel about renting to us with our pets, many people don’t like animals so I hope this won’t cause us too much trouble . Time will tell.

Everyone who knows us is wondering when we are planning to move. As you can see its not possible to have an exact date yet because it all hinges on selling our house. There is still quite a bit choreography to do to organize such a big undertaking. So far I am planning to keep working until June 1, but who knows? This is just my best guess! I know one thing for certain and that is, I’m taking one day at a time. I’m appreciating all the people in my life and the times I’m spending with everyone is precious!

Life is Good! But it's time for a change, and more adventure! I'd like to share the whole experience of preparing then actually making a reality of expatriating, and moving to a new country. It's an exciting, and slightly scary move full of possibility . I'm looking forward to learning a new language and making new connections with the people who share our spirit of adventure. This blog is my way of continuing my connection with my friends and family in the States. Sooooo here it goes! :)
